One multi-tool between three people, but a rain jacket each. The list knows the difference.
Packing and tasks share the same model. Every item can be assigned to everyone or to specific people, and each person ticks only their own boxes β so a shared list stops turning into three of everything or none of the one thing that mattered.
Most shared checklists assume everyone needs everything, which is wrong for group trips in both directions. You end up with three pumps and no chain tool.
An unassigned item means everyone β that is the sensible default and most items stay that way. Assign one to a specific person and it disappears from everyone else's column, replaced by a dash, so it is obvious it is covered and by whom.
| Item | Assigned | AM | SR | JB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rain jacket | All | β | β | β |
| Bike multi-tool | SR | β | β | β |
| Mini pump | JB | β | β | β |
Creating a trip from a template seeds a packing list and a task list appropriate to its length. They are a starting point, not a prescription β the point is that you edit an existing list rather than staring at an empty one.
Duplicating a trip you run every year carries both lists over, which is usually most of the value of duplicating at all.
